The 54th Regiment
The 54th Regiment was a group of black males mostly from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. The men were under a watchful eye because if they performed well in the regiment, there was a possibility Black's would be used in war. The men were sent to Hilton Head, South Carolina in June 3rd, 1863 to fight at James Island. Shortly after arriving, the men had their first experience with battle. But, on July 18th, 1863, the regiment had the chance to prove that Black's could fight in a war by attacking confederate soldiers at Battery Wagner. Unfortunately, the attack was unsuccessful and let the men become known as failure. 54 men from the regiment died, 200 were wounded, and 48 were never accounted for. The regiment continued to fight in battles including the Battle of Honey Hill. The men are still known as the most famous Black Regiment of the Civil War.
